The Maturity Level Model for Genomics in Healthcare (GiH-MLM) framework comprises a set of indicators organised across eight key domains, each assessed through five progressive levels of maturity. Collectively, the GiH-MLM domains address the core dimensions essential for the effective implementation of genomic medicine, namely:
DI. Governance and strategy
DII. Investment and economic model
DIII. Ethics, legislation and policy
DIV. Public awareness and acceptance
DV. Workforce skills and organisation
DVI. Clinical organisation, infrastructure and tools
DVII. Clinical genomics guidelines and infrastructure
DVIII. Data management, standards and infrastructure
This structured scoring approach allows healthcare systems to identify strengths, gaps, and priorities, while guiding the development of a clear strategic pathway towards optimisation.
The GiH-MLM is freely available. Further information can be found in a Webinar that provides an overview of the model, its objectives, applications and practical use. It further explains how experts and institutions can engage with the team involved in its development, within the scope of the “1+ Million Genomes” European initiative.
To enable comparative analysis across healthcare systems, the GiH-MLM Benchmarking Tool derives results from data submitted directly by participating countries. As additional healthcare systems contribute, the dataset becomes progressively more comprehensive and robust, enhancing the reliability and comparative value of the analysis.
Built on a harmonised methodology and shared definitions, the benchmarking tool ensures transparency and comparability, while offering a coherent overview of progress in genomics implementation across Europe. The platform generates benchmarking outputs that include comparisons with the median and highest scores among participating healthcare systems, as well as longitudinal comparisons with previous submissions from the same healthcare system.
Benchmarking results can be downloaded to support further analysis and reporting. For detailed instructions on how to navigate the tool and address technical issues, please consult the User Guide.
Access to the GiH-MLM Benchmarking Tool is available upon request. Please contact gihmlm.benchmarking@insa.min-saude.pt to receive access credentials.
